Geneva, NY is one of my favorite places on earth. I’m not sure why, really. It just feels so magical there.
The calming lake views, the adorable downtown, the rows of rainbow townhouses that always remind me of the opening scene of 101 Dalmatians (and London, I suppose). It’s the perfect spot to base yourself for a visit to the whimsical Finger Lakes region of New York.
Until recently, I had never spent more than a few hours at one time here. We always stopped here for a picnic lunch by the lake on our way to our church camp in central NY, or for ice cream on the way home. But every time we start the drive along Seneca Lake, I get that feeling that here is somewhere magical.
And finally, finally I got to stay overnight for a weekend. We ate in a castle. We visited a cozy coffee shop. We stayed in a fun apartment overlooking downtown. I woke up to watch the sun rise over the lake, and left before it actually did because they were setting up for a 5K and I was too embarrassed to stand around and wait…
Yep. Magical.
And I can’t wait to go back.

About Geneva, NY
Geneva, NY is in the heart of New York’s Finger Lakes region. It is a small city of about 13,000 people, and home to Hobart and William Smith Colleges. The region is famous for its wineries, and also boasts several spas and luxury hotels.
- Fun Fact: It’s also known as the Trout Capital of the World.
Where is Geneva, NY?
Geneva, NY sits on the northern edge of Seneca Lake, one of the largest, deepest, and most central Finger Lakes in New York State. It is about halfway in between Rochester and Syracuse, about an hour’s drive from each.
Best Time of Year to Visit Geneva
Overall, the best time to visit (anywhere in New York) is between the months of May-October. Personally, I don’t think there’s any reason to visit this area in the winter or early spring.
Fall is absolutely gorgeous, especially if you’re also visiting some of the nearby state parks. But I think the best time to come is in the summer. It is peak tourist season, but the best things to do in Geneva typically involve the outdoors (and/or ice cream). You want warm weather to be able to enjoy the lake, hiking trails, meandering through town, and watching the sun set from the patio with a glass of local wine.
Where to Stay in Geneva
I absolutely loved the little apartment we stayed at in downtown Geneva. It was so cute and charming, and easy to walk around downtown or to the lake from.
There is quite a variety of places to stay in Geneva. If you don’t want to splurge on a luxury hotel, I think the best way to do it is to rent a cabin or apartment on Vrbo, but here are a few suggestions to get you started.
Downtown Apartment
We rented a cute, one-bedroom apartment right in downtown Geneva. This is perfect for one or two people. It was cozy, with a living room and kitchen overlooking downtown. I plan to stay here again the next time I visit Geneva.
Belhurst Castle
A splurge-worthy stay in Geneva is the castle overlooking the lake! We didn’t stay here, but we did have dinner in the castle (and it was so magical)!
Belhurst Castle & Winery has two restaurants and two hotels on site, in addition to their spa. You can stay in one of the Chambers in the Castle guestrooms for a cozy and charming stay. Or in the Vinifera Inn, their newer addition to the castle.
Geneva on the Lake
Geneva on the Lake is another splurge-worthy resort. My parents always wanted to stay here, every time we passed it on our way to camp (to stay in much different accommodations!). The hotel is expensive, but absolutely gorgeous.
41 Lakefront Hotel
If I was going to stay in a traditional hotel, this is the one I would choose. 41 Lakefront Hotel sits right on the shores of Seneca Lake, between the FLX Welcome Center and the public park. However, my sister did stay here with her husband on their anniversary trip to the Thousand Islands, and she was not impressed with it.
Personally, I don’t think it’s a bad place to stay, but there are better options in Geneva.
The William Smith Inn
The William Smith Inn is a cozy and historic bed & breakfast in Geneva, named after the founder of William Smith Colleges. It is housed near downtown in a home built in the late 1800’s. Each room is unique, and comes with a full homemade breakfast every morning!
Vacation Rental
If you’re coming with a larger group, I think the best way to go is a vacation rental. There are so many great options to find on Vrbo or Booking.com. Maybe with a lake view or a fire pit!
Geneva, NY Day 1
Today is not a full day in Geneva. This itinerary can be mixed and matched to meet your needs/preferences, but it assumes you are arriving on a Friday night, spending all day Saturday, and leaving Sunday afternoon.
- Day 1: Late afternoon/evening arrival
- Day 2: Full day in Geneva
- Day 3: Morning in Geneva
But again, you can just take ideas of things to do in Geneva and places to eat, and follow this itinerary however you want to.
Dinner at Smokin’ Pete’s
There are so many good places to eat in Geneva! I wish we had more time to try other places (have to go back, I guess!). But our very first stop was Smokin’ Pete’s, a barbecue spot Jason had found on social media and been drooling over for a year.
This was a perfect first stop for us, because it is about ten minutes outside of downtown Geneva, so it was right on our way into town. Be prepared for a wait, but the line moves quickly, and there is lots of seating inside and out. Some nights they even have live music outside.
Other Dinner Options in Geneva
If you’re not into barbecue, or you just want some more options, here are a few more good recommendations for dinner right in downtown Geneva. But there are so many options, I couldn’t list them all! There really is an impressive variety of restaurants to choose from in Geneva.
Grab Ice Cream for Dessert
I loved all the food at Smokin’ Pete’s, but personally I would say to skip the mini pies, and grab some local ice cream for dessert. I wasn’t able to try Geneva Gelato on our trip, because they unfortunately closed before we could get there, but I have had the wine infused ice cream at the stand by the lake!
Geneva, NY Day 2
A full day enjoying all the best things to do in Geneva, NY (hopefully it’s not raining…)! As long as you have good weather, one full day is really all you need to enjoy the best of Geneva.
Here’s an overview of what to expect today:

Start Your Morning in a Local Coffee Shop
There is no shortage of local coffee shops around downtown Geneva. I debated for an hour on which one to visit (since I had woken up for sunrise and they weren’t even open yet…). I definitely need to go back and visit more, since hanging out in local coffee shops is one of my favorite things to do (as I currently am doing as I write this…!).
Here are some of the options to choose from:
Check Out the FLX Welcome Center
After coffee, the first stop will be the Finger Lakes Welcome Center. Browse the pamphlets, or chat with the staff about the best things to do in Geneva and the surrounding areas. It’s a good spot to get ideas for any free time you haven’t planned out yet or meals or wineries you might want to try.
You can also buy locally made products in their store, or get more coffee in the cafe, and drink it out by the lake. Maybe pick up some snacks for a picnic lunch, or just to take home with you.
And be sure to take a picture by the I heart NY sign of course!
Enjoy Seneca Lake
No trip to Geneva is complete without getting out to enjoy Seneca Lake. You can rent kayaks to explore the lake, or if you’d rather just relax and soak in some sun, visit the beach at Seneca Lake State Park instead!
You can find places to rent kayaks, or book a private boat tour at the welcome center, so be sure to check there if you are looking for ideas. You could also rent bikes, and bike along the lake instead of kayaking.

Quick Lunch
Grab something quick and light for lunch, since you’ll be doing wine tastings and having a big dinner later. A good place to grab something is the cafe at the welcome center or Wegmans. You could also get lunch at one of the wineries.
- Good to Know: If you’re not into wine, you can find plenty of other ways to fill your time. Visit the shops downtown, spend more time at the lake, or see some of the options under day 3 and other things to do further down in this article.
- In addition, you can find other things to do at wineries, like an 18-hole disc golf course, or walking trails through the vineyards.
Afternoon Winery Tour & Tasting
I have a confession. I am not much of a wine drinker (or anything drinker, really, other than PSLs). I have never been on a winery tour in the Finger Lakes, but it is the thing to do here, so you definitely should! If you want to, that is.
There are so many options to visit. Be sure to check out recommendations in the welcome center, or maybe head out on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail to try several different ones! They also have events, different types of tours and other activities, and even whole day excursions (including transportation!) available.
Dinner in a Castle
Splurge for dinner at Edgar’s Restaurant in the Castle at Belhurst Castle. I loved the bread and wine here (and the dessert board is “famous,” but it was all too rich and I was too full of “bad for me” food already that day…). Our actual entrees were ok, but maybe a little too fancy for my taste. However, the atmosphere was stunning, in an old castle, overlooking the lake!
After dinner we walked around the grounds for a while, enjoying the lake views and gardens.
- Good to Know: If you want to eat in the castle, but not splurge quite so much (or eat such fancy food), you can also eat at Stonecutter’s Tavern.
Of course, if having dinner in a castle isn’t your thing (what?!), you can also have dinner at the winery you toured earlier, or of course any of the other above mentioned local restaurants.
See a Show at Smith Opera House
If there happens to be a good show on at Smith Opera House in downtown Geneva, this will be the perfect way to end your evening. Of course, they don’t always have shows on, so if not, then ice cream downtown is a very agreeable alternative.
Geneva, NY Day 3
Sunrise on the Lake
This is optional of course. But a sunrise over the lake is a great way to start the day. Except of course if you get there too early and they’re seeing up for a 5K so you leave before the sun actually comes up… (guess I have to go back again…?).
Anyway, there are plenty of spots to watch the sun come up over the lake, whether right at the welcome center, or at one of the benches overlooking the lake from the hill above town on S. Main. St.
Breakfast at Another Coffee Shop
Luckily we have more than one day to try out local coffee shops for breakfast, so choose a different one and start your day here! Or brew your own coffee and take it with you to watch the sunrise over the lake (or both).
Another good spot to get a local breakfast is the cafe at Sweet Acres Creamery. Plus you can pick up some local dairy products while you’re there!
Slow Morning in Geneva
Take your time this morning to just relax and enjoy the vibe of where you are right now. Wake up slowly (or early… Again, the sunrise is optional), go out for breakfast, and maybe find some fun low-key activity for the morning. The time is yours.
Didn’t have time to do everything you wanted yesterday? Visit a beach this morning! Or do a morning kayak trip today if you would rather spend more time touring wineries (maybe the guided excursion?) yesterday.

Other Things to Do Near Geneva
If you have more time, Geneva is a great place to base yourself to explore more of the Finger Lakes. Here are some of the coolest places to visit in the area, all in under an hour and a half drive.
Watkins Glen
Watkins Glen is without a doubt one of the best places to visit in all of NY State! It’s just a 1 hour drive along Seneca Lake (Watkins Glen sits at the bottom, Geneva at the top) to this small town with one of the best state parks in NY. It looks like the setting of Lord of the Rings.
There are also lots of great restaurants, and scenic boat rides you can enjoy at this end of the lake.
Seneca Falls
Seneca Falls is just 20 minutes from Geneva, and is the birthplace of women’s rights! Not only is it home to the Women’s Rights National Historic Park, it is also a bonafide Hallmark Christmas town, being recognized as the inspiration for It’s a Wonderful Life.
Penn Yan
Penn Yan is another completely adorable Finger Lakes town that sits on the edge of Keuka Lake, just under 30 minutes from Geneva. Here you can see the world’s largest pancake griddle, enjoy their lakefront park and explore the shops and cafes downtown. A popular stop is the Spotted Duck, a farm and creamery famous for their duck egg ice cream.
Taughannock Falls State Park
Taughannock Falls is another one of the best spots to visit in the Finger Lakes! The 215 foot waterfall is easy to hike to and definitely worth seeing. Plus you can experience Cayuga Lake while you’re there, or go a little further into Ithaca, where you’ll find more waterfall hikes, museums, restaurants, and Cornell University.
It’s just a 45 minute drive from Geneva to Taughannock Falls, and 1 hour to Ithaca.
Corning Museum of Glass
Corning Museum of Glass is a little further, about an hour and 15 minutes, but it is worth the drive (try to pair it with a trip to Watkins Glen, as you’ll go right past Watkins Glen to get there. The museum houses multiple galleries of every kind of glass you can imagine (or didn’t imagine!).
It’s great for history buffs and art lovers. The best part is joining a make your own glass class and wandering around the huge gift shop (both of which you can do without a museum entry ticket).
Downtown Corning is also super cute. It’s even won awards for it.
